Everything SUNSCREEN!

(Photo above taken by me in French Polynesia)

Hi beauties!

Today’s post is ALL about SUNSCREEN! I’ve been meaning to write a post on sunscreen for a while now and with warmer weather just around the corner, this is the perfect time! I also get quite a few questions about sunscreen…This topic might sound pretty simple but it’s actually not LOL There are so many different types of sunscreens and ingredients out there and it’s important to know what products are actually effective at blocking those damaging UV rays.

Okay so I have a serious confession to make…I used to be a major sun worshipper :-O Being born and raised in the beach cities in sunny Los Angeles, it just felt normal. My grandmother actually TAUGHT me how to tan and lay out at the beach when I was just 7 or 8 years old (crazy and horrible I know). It became a habit. I NEVER wore sunscreen, I used to live in my swim suit and my skin was ALWAYS burned/tan. I actually thought that I had darker skin than I do naturally (I’m actually SUPER white)! I used tanning beds for years and years because being tan made me feel good! Unfortunately all of that sun tanning caught up with me and I developed a cancerous lesion on my leg. I had it removed and luckily it was just at the beginning stages. This was a SERIOUS wake up call for me. I began to study about UV rays and learned just how damaging they are to the skin and to the body. I kick myself thinking about all of the skin damage I brought on to myself…but hey we all make mistakes.

Although I made some not so smart choices in my younger years…the good news is that some sun damage is reversible with light and laser procedures and further damage can be prevented by using sunscreen and taking other precautionary methods.

There are TWO types of sunscreen that you can buy in stores:

Chemical Sunscreen: Products that absorb UV rays and prevent them from penetrating into the skin such as PABA and Oxybenzone

Physical or “Mineral” Sunscreen: Products that use UV filters that reflect, scatter and block the sun’s rays such as Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide

Research has shown that some chemical sunscreens cause allergic reactions, hormonal issues and other skin sensitivities. A good physical or “mineral” sunscreen with UV filters is the recommended choice as it sits on top of the skin and causes the least amount of irritation while protecting from both UVA and UVB rays. This is why you will find that most sunscreen for babies are physical ones as it provides the most protection and is the least irritating. It is still important to check with your dermatologist or skin expert to see which sunscreen is best for your lifestyle.

I have tried maaaaany sunscreens but when I tested  the La Roche-Posay Anthelios mineral tinted SPF 50 I never looked back. I know this brand’s price point is a little steep BUT…It is a 100% physical “mineral” sunscreen with antioxidants to protect from environmental damage associated with atmospheric skin aging. It’s filled with good for skin ingredients, is lightly tinted, fast absorbing, non greasy, with ultra-light texture and a matte finish. It is perfect as a first step before makeup. The universal tint matches most skin tones and provides a natural glow. On days I want to go make-up free, I just put this on and it gives my skin such a beautiful, glowy, natural look with just the right amount of coverage. I have tried tinted sunscreens that have turned me orange or the tint was off, but with this sunscreen the color blends into the skin seamlessly. If you aren’t a fan of tint they also have the Anthelios mineral SPF 60 which is basically the same product but colorless….I use this one for my neck and chest so that I don’t transfer color onto my clothes.

If you prefer an easy one step foundation, moisturizing type of sunscreen (think all in one moisturizer, primer, foundation AND sunscreen) then the La Roche-Posay Mineral Sunscreen Tinted Primer is your best bet! This one is also pretty awesome. If you are looking for a cheaper alternative to the anthelios, the Neutrogena Sheer SPF 50 is a great option!

On days I want even more coverage, I use the IT cosmetics full coverage CC cream SPF 50 over top to ensure that I am fully protected. This combination is amazing and gives such a beautiful, hydrated, glowy look to the skin which we are all so desperately after…right? 😀 It’s important to know that just because some make-up products have SPF in them does not mean that you should skip your sunscreen. Sunscreen is always number one then the SPF in makeup is just an added bonus. According to directions, you are supposed to re-apply sunscreen every few hours if you are out in the sun…the BEST way I have found to do this without ruining my makeup is dust a translucent sunscreen powder on my face to keep everything looking fresh while protecting at the same time. The brand Colorescience has got this down to a T. I’m obsessed with this product!

All Products mentioned:

La Roche-Posay Anthelios mineral tinted SPF 50

La Roche-Posay Anthelios mineral SPF 60

La Roche-Posay Mineral Sunscreen Tinted Primer

Neutrogena Sheer SPF 50

IT cosmetics full coverage CC cream SPF 50

Colorescience Sunforgettable Setting Powder

I hope this post has brought you some clarity about sunscreen! What brand/type of sunscreen do you wear currently? Comment below! Wishing you happy, healthy, glowing skin always!

The ONLY eyeshadow brush you need!

Hi beauty!

Thanks for stopping by! Today I’ll be talking about one eyeshadow brush I use on the daily to create all of my makeup looks. This works for day or night time looks! I know that when it comes to brushes, there are SO many options out there and it can be very confusing.

The ONLY brush I use for my crease and entire eye area from lid to brow is the Morphe M441 blending brush which runs for about $6 on Morphe.com. I used to use the Mac 217 blending brush which goes for $30! until I came across the Morphe. This brush is PHENOMENAL! I am not kidding. If I could only choose one eyeshadow brush for the rest of my life, it would be this one. It has lasted me years, doesn’t shed at all and still works beautifully. It blends shadow so easily and can be used in the crease or all over from the lid up to the brow bone. I use this brush every single day to dust a light bronzer over my lids for a little color or I will use it in my crease for evening looks.

thumbnail

The second brush is optional because you can actually use your finger for your eyelids…but I use a flat brush such as this one or the one pictured above and below, to pack color on my lids such as a shimmer or if I want to use a different color than what I used for my crease. As I said, this brush is not a necessity and I usually use my finger…but having said that, it can be useful if you want to pack a LOT of color on for a dramatic look, or if you want precision for a cut crease with concealer and shadow.

Beauty Tip: To create the perfect eyeshadow look, take the Morphe 441 blending brush and dust a light color or bronzer into your crease and then with your finger or a flat brush, pack on shimmer or a different color on the lid. Blend the outer edges, add some mascara and you’re done!

How to get smooth, acne and blackhead-free skin naturally!

Hello loves!

Today’s post is a beauty tip (or hack!) on how to exfoliate your face or body for smooth, acne and blackhead-free skin naturally!

There are SOOO many exfoliating products out there and for such ridiculous prices! The last sample I received of an exfoliating product had ingredients listed that I couldn’t even pronounce. Why bother spending a ton of money, when you can get the same if not better benefit of a natural product that is most likely right in your pantry (and only $2!)

Now this one might come to you a surprise…(or not)…but you likely have this product sitting in your fridge to keep smells at bay lol

Arm-Hammer-Pure-Baking-SodaAnd TA-DA! Here is the magic product….Baking soda! Now HOW does this product keep your face smooth, exfoliated and acne-free you ask?

  • Baking soda dries up acne and is a natural antibiotic that heals the skin. Its long term benefits include fading acne scars and speed the healing of acne damage.
  • Baking soda can help remove blackheads. When left on your nose (like a mask) for a few minutes, it loosens the tough skin so that you can easily extract the blackheads with a tissue….most of the time it just does the trick after I wash it off!
  • Baking soda keeps oily skin at bay and prevents pores from clogging up. It provides a beautiful smooth canvas for makeup application.

I usually mix a small amount into my daily face wash but you may not need to use it every day. My skin is quite oily and I do wear a lot of makeup, so I need to exfoliate often.

If you have never tried this before, or if you do not regularly exfoliate…complete a patch test in a small area first to ensure you don’t have any reactions. If you do not have a reaction then you can mix a tiny amount (about the size of a pea) of baking soda in to your face wash no more than 2 times a week.

It is important not to leave the baking soda on your skin for too long. I try to stay away from “Baking soda masks” as it can irritate your face due to the pH and acidity of the product. You can get some for cheap here!

There are so many other uses for baking soda as well…you can add it to shampoo to keep flakes or dandruff away and to exfoliate product build up on the scalp….you can add it to your toothpaste to whiten your teeth (not often though!) I use it to exfoliate and soften my nails and cuticles… It’s an all around great product 🙂

What types of exfoliating products do you use? Have you ever thought of using baking soda? Try it out and let me know your thoughts! 🙂

My Beauty Secret For Natural Glowing Skin

Hey lovelies!

I am giving away my #1 beauty secret…yup…I love you that much ;D

I’ve been planning to write this post for a loooooong time, so here we go!

For the past three-four years, I have been using a miracle essential oil/water that is SO good for the skin and super inexpensive to buy…

81N5qlwbNrL._SL1500_Unknown-1

Pure Organic Rosehip seed oil  which is only $6!

and I LOVE Mario Badescu’s rosewater spray which is $7

The benefits of Rosehip seed oil and rose water on the skin are incredible and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone:)

I use the pure rosehip seed oil as a moisturizer in the morning before makeup application and in the evening before bed. You can also mix a 1-2 drops of the oil into your foundation to give you a beautiful, youthful, glow from within look. NO, this will not make your skin oily! I have oily-combo skin and this does not make me greasy or shiny. You can try with one drop at first to see how you like it. I also use this as an eye makeup remover or on any (healed) cuts/scars I might have.

Rosehip Seed Oil Facts:

  • Extracted from the seeds of a native rose plant which grows wild in Chile
  • Naturally contains vitamin A, C, & E (all wonderful anti-aging essentials)
  • High in essential fatty acids
  • Was used by Ancient Egyptians, Mayans and Native Americans for its healing properties

Benefits of Pure Organic Rosehip seed oil:

  • Corrects UV damage from the sun
  • Naturally tones the skin
  • Minimize appearance of wrinkles
  • Prevents scarring and stretch marks
  • Reduce fine lines
  • Rejuvenates skin cells
  • Dramatically improves skin moisture levels
  • Reduces stress naturally!
  • leaves the skin looking radiant and with a healthy glow

Now…the Rosewater Spray…

I mist the rosewater all over my face before makeup application, and spray on to my beauty blender to blend out my concealer and foundation. I spray the rosewater on eyeshadow and highlighter brushes before dipping in the product, to give a more pigmented, brighter look. I will also spritz it all over my face after makeup application to set and remove any powdery residue…as well as spraying it all over for an all natural beautiful smelling fragrance!

Benefits of Organic Rosewater Spray

  • Tones and softens delicate skin
  • Relieves stress
  • Improves circulation
  • Lessens acne
  • Help prevent wrinkles
  • Help maintain youthful glow
  • Awakens the senses
  • Brightens complexion
  • Cleanses pores
  • Uplifts mood
  • Tightens pores

And THIS my friends, is why I use Rosehip seed oil and Rose water for EVERYthing. Try it out for yourself and let me know how you like it!

The exact products I use are here and here.

I wish you all happiness and beautiful glowing skin…always! ❤

Kitty Cat Halloween Make-up!

HISSSSSSSSSSSS! Meeeoooow!!

IMG_2460

BOO! Hope I didn’t scare ya ;-D

This look was SUPER popular, so I definitely had to create a blog post for it 😀 Halloween is near and it has always been my favorite time of the year…. Although, I feel that I have become much more of a scaredy cat these days lol (no pun intended :D) But I do love Halloween because I get to play around with all kinds of different makeup looks! Here is my inspiration for this kitty cat makeup look:

FullSizeRender 5

She’s a cutie right??!

Anyway…I went to fright night in Vancouver last night, which is filled with haunted houses, monsters, and crazies! Of course, I was chased as usual! Never fails! This year, I don’t plan on going out for Halloween night…back when I lived in LA, I used to go out every single year but I feel as though creating these makeup looks at home with a glass or two of wine is just as fun for me 🙂

SO! I decided to go with a super blended black smokey eye for this look as it just seemed perfect. The liquid liner I placed on my bottom lash line definitely gives more of a dramatic cat eye effect. I also like to use this technique on any other makeup look to give it the eyes a bit more drama and an elongated effect.

Now before I go into my makeup details, I DO have to rave about The Kat Von D tattoo liner in “Trooper” Honestly, this eyeliner is AMAZING! If you don’t have it, I suggest going out right now and buying it! You will NOT be disappointed. This liner is perfect for anyone from a beginner to a pro. The tip of the brush is phenomenal…it allows for such precision and essentially creates the perfect line or wing effortlessly. I used the liner for my eye details as well as for the whiskers and dots on my face. I am planning to get the liner in brown as well because it would be perfect for day time.

A Fall Perspective & Make-up look!

Happy October beautiful people!!!!

I actually couldn’t be happier that it’s October 😀 As I’m sure you all know by now, fall is my absolute faaaaaaaaavorite season! I never knew this until I moved to Vancouver. I remember visiting Vancity during the fall and being completely drawn to the trees, all the colors and leaves falling to the ground. I used to think hot, sunny, summer weather with no seasons was the best…but unfortunately you miss the beauty of seasons when you live in sunny Southern California! Fall quickly became a season I adored living in Vancouver and I look forward to it every year.

Each year, on a nice sunny fall day, I grab a Starbucks and take a long walk by myself. It’s a time where I can simply be present, take in the beauty of life, and of nature. It’s a time where I can be thankful that I am alive and well, while appreciating how far I have come and everything and everyone I have in my life. It’s so easy to forget all of this in the hustle and bustle of a busy life. I used to think that I was drawn to fall simply because of the colors and leaves but I found that there is a much deeper meaning behind my admiration for this special season.

Bear with me here as I give you my perspective 🙂 As I’m walking through the park, the leaves are falling over my head and while I am stepping on the many leaves that are on the ground… I can’t help but feel that this is a time of renewal and an end to the present year. I feel that each leaf that falls is a part of me that I’m leaving behind. We are constantly growing and changing each year and I feel that fall really symbolizes this. So whatever it may be that you’re leaving behind this year…negativity, old jobs, old friends, maybe things or ideas that haven’t worked out…whatever that has happened to change you as a person…simply picture the leaves falling and that you’re moving forward. A new year full of opportunity, happiness, experiences and excitement is headed our way friends!

IMG_2180

NOW! On to the make-up of course! If you’ve made it this far, you rock! lol Here is a look I created last weekend 🙂

IMG_2181

I mainly used browns and beige/golden shimmers for this look. Just want to let you guys know, if I mention a certain palette, it doesn’t mean you need to go out and buy it! If you have similar colors then you can use those! You can even use matte bronzers and shimmery highlighters as eyeshadows! Here’s a Tip! Wet your brush before dipping into any eyeshadow or highlighter to give a more vibrant and pigmented look!

Make-up details!

  • Ginzing eye cream and face moisturizer… here and here
  • Dr Brandt Pore no more primer…instantly mattifies and shrinks pores here
  • Loreal Visible Lift foundation…flawless gorgeous coverage, photographs beautifully here Unfortunately the one that I have has been discontinued (I stocked up on my last LA trip) but here is the alternative product they offer.

  • Marcelle loose setting powder to set everything, gives a gorgeous, flawless smooth look here
  • Anastasia Beverly Hills contour kit to contour hollow of cheek bones here
  • Anastasia Beverly Hills Tamanna palette...Nude (or any beige color) all over from lid to brow bone, Bengal & Chocolate (any light and dark brown) in the crease  here
